DRAFT PETITION:
MAKE PEACE STUDIES A CORE SUBJECT IN SCHOOLS
To: The Secretary of State for Education
We, the undersigned, call on the Secretary of State for Education to introduce Peace Studies as a core subject within the national curriculum, ensuring that every child and young person gains the knowledge, skills, and values needed to build a peaceful, cohesive, and responsible society.
Why this is important
Children and young people must be equipped to navigate a world marked by conflict, division, misinformation, and rapid social change. Peace Studies provides practical competencies in conflict resolution, empathy, critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and responsible decision-making – skills essential for life, not just for school.
As the civic role of young people expands, Peace Studies will prepare future voters and leaders to make informed, ethical choices that strengthen harmony at home, in communities, and across the world.
At a time when schools face increasing challenges – bullying, polarisation, mental-health pressures, online harms – teaching peace is no longer optional. It is a necessary safeguard, supporting wellbeing, safer school environments, and long-term social cohesion.
Every child has the right to grow as a thoughtful, empathetic, and responsible citizen, capable of choosing dialogue over division and cooperation over conflict.
We therefore urge the Secretary of State for Education to:
- Introduce Peace Studies as a compulsory component of the national curriculum across all key stages.
- Provide teachers with the necessary training, resources, and guidance required to deliver high-quality peace education.
- Work collaboratively with young people, educators, peace organisations, and community partners to design an inclusive, evidence-based programme that inspires and empowers.
YOUR VOICE CAN HELP TRANSFORM EDUCATION!
Let us ensure that peace, respect, and understanding become core foundations of every classroom.
Sign this petition today and help give every child the chance to grow as a peacemaker and a leader for a better world.
Thank you.
